Recycled Sweater Mitten Pattern and Instructions in Three Sizes

Bernie Sanders made sweater mittens famous this week! And the kids have always lost one or another by this time of the season. And you’ve grown weary of sewing masks, right?! This is perfect pattern for thrifted wool sweaters, even better (and warmer) if they’ve been accidently shrunk in the wash! Of course, send them through the washer and dryer on purpose to transform them into a soft, dense material that can be repurposed without unraveling.

Polar fleece works too – maybe even two different colors. You can also use fleece for a inside liner layer – make the same-sized pattern in fleece and insert in outer mitten with seams together; use a blanket stitch to bind lower edges together for cuff. You could add fun novelty buttons or creative stitchery at the cuff. Grandma-to-be Kathy has been making dozens of fun versions for low-income school children.
