FREE DIY Saturdays are back @HomeDepot

Kids LOVE to build things! And we might not have all the “ingredients” around anymore, or the courage and patience that might also be required. Home Depot to the rescue!

Home Depot Kids Workshops are back (post Covid) on the first Saturday of every month all around the country, usually from 9-noon local time. From the general Home Depot website, you need to click to your local store website for all the details and instructions to register ahead online. You can drop in with your grandchild anytime during the workshop class but make sure to leave enough time to complete their project before it ends. Be sure to register so they have enough kits to go around. You can also register and take home the free kit on that Saturday if it doesn’t work out for the kids that day.

THE PROJECT

The Workshop projects are usually made from precut wood and designed for both boys and girls. Fire trucks, birdhouses, picture frames, toolboxes, mail organizers, race cars, and planters are a few recent ones. The selections are often seasonal or holiday-themed – the September kit is for a pencil organizer for back-to-school. The project choice is posted on the website closer to the event to plan accordingly.

THE FINISH

Once your project is complete, you and your grandchild can decorate it with paint and stickers also supplied. There are Home Depot instructors, but all Kids Workshop attendees must be accompanied by a parent or adult at all times. All kids get to keep their craft, receive a FREE certificate of achievement, a Workshop Apron, and a commemorative pin while supplies last (I think we still have Daniel’s and he is 20!). Children must be present at the store to participate in the workshop and receive the kit, apron and pin.

HOME OPTIONS

Some of the kits are also available for purchase if the kids (or you!) get hooked. They also sell a complete party kit (cup, plates etc.) if you are inspired to throw a DIY birthday party. The orange aprons are also available for purchase to complete the theme.

AGE AND INTEREST

This monthly event is a win-win, and FREE! It is so fun to build something together, and even better with help and supplies. The workshops are advertised for 5-12, but mine have done it younger (3) since we are used to projects and building. I would think a 10-12 year old would be too mature to be interested unless they haven’t been exposed to projects like this – you know your Grands! Home Depot also has lots of other virtual project guides HERE. Lowes also has some great Kids' Beginner Project Kits for purchase.
